Governor Quinn Announces more than $21 million for Parks and Open Space…..Alsip Park District named one of the grant recipients
At the Illinois Association of Park Districts Legislative Conference in “These kinds of projects help strengthen the fabric of local communities throughout Fifty-nine projects are being funded statewide through the 2009 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program facilitated through Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Of those, 10 will result in the purchase of new land and 49 will focus on the outdoor recreation development including $400,000.00 to the Alsip Park District for improvements to Sears Park including new parking lots, new climbing playground, a multi-use lighted path with fitness stations, multi-use playfield, pavilion with overlook and reconstruction of pond edge incorporating prairie plantings. “These grants are vital to the goal of leaving no child inside and helping to fashion future stewards of our natural resources,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller. The $21.2 million awarded throughout the state this year combined with the grantee’s minimum 50 percent share will result in more that $42.4 million of local acquisition and development projects to enhance the quality of life in The Alsip Park District Board of Commissioners and Staff are extremely appreciative for Governor Quinn’s commitment to natural resources and the environment. About the Alsip Park DistrictThe Alsip Park District was established on December 5, 1965. We continue to dedicate ourself to providing the community with the finest quality in parks, facilities and recreational activities for all ages. The park district currently offers 20 park locations occupying 201 acres of park land (see Parks & Facilities for specific information and locations). A dedicated Board of Commissioners, hard working staff and an enthusiastic volunteers have resulted in successful and innovative program offerings to participants of all ages. Over 800 programs and special events ranging from Pre-School to Mature Adults are offered throughout the year and published in four seasonal brochures. as a result of the dedicated service of the Board of Commissioners, staff and volunteers, the Alsip Park District received National recognition by being selected as a Gold Medal Winner by the National Sports Foundation. The Gold Medal Award represents excellence in the field of park and recreation management.
